GPT-5: The Next Big Thing You Must Know About!

GPT 5

GPT-5 is OpenAI’s next big project in Large Language Models (LLMs). Currently, it’s a work in progress. OpenAI has been moving quickly in this space, especially after rolling out GPT-4.

Rumor has it that GPT-5 might finish training by December and hit the market in 2024. Details are scarce though, so what GPT-5 can really do remains a bit of a mystery.

GPT-5 may be on its way. Though Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI has said that “we are certainly not close to it to start.”

Since the advent of the first GPT model in 2018, large language models (LLM) have taken the world by storm and demonstrated astonishing capabilities, be it generating code or writing long-form content in seconds. It did, however, replace almost 60 million jobs and may take over 800 million jobs by 2020 according to Forbes.

A lot has changed since its release. Google and Microsoft Bing have also boarded the bandwagon and released their own chatbots, namely Bard and Microsoft Bing Chatbot by investing over $10 billion.

The latest GPT model— GPT 4 which serves 1.5 trillion makes it among the largest LLM to date, but here’s the good news…

In case you didn’t know here’s the list of all GPT models released in the past years:

OpenAI GPT models timeline
Guodong (Troy) Zhao / Medium
  • GPT-1 (2018):  This model was not released publicly. It was trained on a dataset of about 40GB of text data and contained 117 million parameters.
  • GPT-2 (2019): With 1.5 billion parameters, GPT-2 was trained on data 10 times larger than GPT-1 and had a better understanding of natural language.
  • GPT-3.5 (2022): A revolutionary model that gained over 100 million users within just 2 months.
  • GPT-4: This latest model was a much more accurate and improved version with infused external plugins and could only be accessed via a subscription of $20 per month.

ChatGPT 5 Release Date: Will There Be Another OpenAI Successor?

The release of OpenAI is currently unknown and no official information has been provided about its launch date or features.

Some sources have predicted its forthcoming by 2024 or later while others point to hidden procedures in the making of the new GPT model after GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.

In a discussion about threats posed by AI systems and after the 1,100 signatory letters proposed by Elon Musk to halt the development of AI systems, OpenAI’s CEO and co-founder, Sam Altman, confirmed that the company is not currently training GPT-5.

Altman spoke at the conference hosted by the Indian newspaper Economic Times, “We have a lot of work to do before we start that model,”

He said, “We’re working on the new ideas that we think we need for it, but we are certainly not close to it to start.”

However, he clarified that the company would be expanding on the capacity and capability of its recently launched version GPT-4 considering the safety measures as well.

So we can say that GPT-5 is highly awaited in the world of artificial intelligence but is still a theoretical concept. It could be on the horizon with new possibilities navigating high-tech dimensions.

What are The Possible Features of GPT-5?

  1. Multimodal Inputs and Outputs

Despite being a black box system, GPT-5 will be able to process images, audio, and video as well as other forms of sequential data for example you could ask it to draw a sketch, craft an image, play a game, or even sing a song for you!

  1. Custom Instructions

So we all know how we can prompt engineer ChatGPT but sometimes it flows vaguely and I totally lose my mind but here’s the deal. GPT-5 may just be too good at catching your command and will understand how to respond to your queries. If you want to become a professional app developer or an SEO expert, it’ll do its job very well.

  1. Improved Logical Reasoning and General Knowledge

GPT 5 can handle highly complex and diverse domains, performing much more accurately and better at high-end calculations, operations, common sense reasoning, and facts.

  1. More Natural and Engaging Conversations

GPT 5 will naturally adapt to your tone, mood, personality, and requirements to flow more human-like conversations and may use emojis, GIFs, and even memes to keep the conversation lively.

  1. Fewer Hallucinations

GPT-5 will have a decreased haziness or hallucination—a downside in many chatbots where they generate inaccurate or biased information with complete guarantee. OpenAI might solve this through advanced training methods.

GPT-5 Rivalry: Already in Progress

Since the launch of ChatGPT, Google has been in a whirlwind of competition. The launch was declared as a “code red” by Google’s management and Bard was announced just later in 2023 to protect Google users from going over any other search module.

Though Bard is an experimental chatbot, it has garnered 142+ million visits in May 2023 and works pretty well with slightly less to offer than ChatGPT.

Now Google is on another mission to beat OpenAI’s rivalry by introducing its next-generation foundation model Gemini which follows on PaLM 2—the current AI model behind Bard and is still in training mode. As per Google, the incoming Gemini AI is built to be multimodal on tool and API integration for a higher collaborative effort.

It may be possible that OpenAI is training GPT-4 with various modalities much similar to what they implemented on GPT-3 to transition it to GPT-3.5.

The introduction of plugins, API, and multimodality, instigate the training of GPT-5.

Moreover, Musk’s xAI is about to roll soon, so OpenAI needs to be quick!

Will GPT-5 Achieve AGI?

GPT 5 and its achievement as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) has been a topic of significant speculation and debate in the AI community

Some early reports claim that GPT-5 will reach a level of intelligence that could be considered AGI. However, most experts in the field believe that true AGI is still many years away. According to a survey from forecasters at Metaculus, the achievement of true AGI is not expected until October 2032.

Developer Siqi Chen stated on Twitter that GPT-5 is expected to complete its training by December of this year and that OpenAI anticipates it will achieve AGI. This has sparked discussions and debates within the AI community about whether GPT-5 will indeed achieve AGI.

If GPT-5 does achieve AGI, it will have a significant and transformative impact on the world. The extent and nature of this impact, whether positive or negative, remains to be seen.

The AI industry is abuzz with the notion that GPT-5 might achieve AGI. Beyond this, GPT-5 is also expected to bring improvements such as reduced inference time, enhanced efficiency, and fewer errors in its outputs.

Has The Development of GPT-5 Stopped?

In March 2023, Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, initially mentioned that the team wasn’t training GPT-5 and wouldn’t be for some time. However, more recent updates reveal that OpenAI is now actively working on the development of GPT-5.

GPT-5 is reported to be in the early stages of development. This indicates that while the project has commenced, it is likely still in its initial phases.

GPT-5 could be released in early 2024, though this timeframe is not officially confirmed by OpenAI.

Final Thoughts

While there’s no official word on GPT-5 from OpenAI yet, it’s wise to hold off on any predictions. That said, if a new GPT version drops before 2024, we can probably expect it to outdo GPT-4.

The leap to AI matching human smarts isn’t around the corner, but the anticipation for future AI breakthroughs is definitely building. Stay tuned for the next big thing in AI evolution.
